Made with handwoven wool, this 2x3 antique Persian Tekke textile featuring nine gül medallions in red and beige against a rich madder-red field, originating from Persia circa 1900-1910, is one of the most collectible styles in our Antique Collection.

On the Design:

An antique Turkmen Tekke textile exemplifying a masterwork of nomadic weaving, where nine gül medallions—the distinctive quartered octagonal motifs characteristic of Turkmen tribal designs—create a movement across a deep madder-red field. Each gül exhibits the precise geometric design unique to Tekke weavers, with internal diamond motifs and stepped elements rendered in ivory and indigo against the rich terracotta ground. The border features a series of distinctive minor gül medallions against a russet field, their simplified geometry providing perfect counterpoint to the more complex central motifs. The piece's age is evident in its beautiful state of distress, where time has blessed the textile with an extraordinary patina that speaks to its century-plus history.

Most remarkable is the sophisticated balance between structural geometry and fluid movement—a hallmark of the finest Turkmen weaving traditions. Each medallion maintains perfect proportional relationship to its neighbors while contributing to an overall sense of dynamic energy across the field. Most significant is its depiction of classical Tekke design elements in their purest form, before the significant cultural changes of the 20th century affected traditional weaving practices. This piece is an exemplar of Central Asian tribal weaving, demonstrating why Tekke textiles remain among the most sought-after examples of nomadic art for collectors.

Condition:

This antique Persian Tekke textile, at least 100 years old, is distressed for the floor, but a collectible for its age and origin.
