Maarten Baptist is an enthusiast for designing cutlery: “The design process is complicated because all elements have to be balanced, therefore there are many iterations in the design. The production is elaborate since there is a mould for every curve. But I still love designing cutlery. It is all worth it because cutlery sets stay in the family.”

Maarten Baptist designed the Outline Cutlery as his graduation project from Design Academy Eindhoven. He had an dinner with friends in mind for whom he wanted to design iconic tools. His first sketches consisted of seven sets. Each set would characterise one of his friends. Finally, he graduated with one set that embodies everyone’s personality…

For the relaunch, Maarten Baptist mainly focussed on perfecting the pieces, for instance, the thickness of the outline changed slightly. The series is made out of 18/08 stainless steel, which makes for very durable cutlery. Each of the sizes come in three colourways: matte satin, polished and black polished. The black colour is added through Physical Vapour Deposition, which is a scratch-resistant coating. The set resembles the first pencil drawings of the Outline Cutlery.

The Outline Cutlery consists of a full dinner set. The dining fork’s middle tooth is a little shorter than the other teeth, giving it a fish fork’s function to be enjoyed together with the fish knife. Next to the relaunch, the series has also been expanded with a small set of cutlery items — in all three colourways — which can serve perfectly for dishes like starters, cakes and pastries. Furthermore, they are sized for kids to use.

I'm designing because ‘some products should just exist’.

With his steadily growing range of food-related products, Maarten wants to challenge home cooks as well as baristas to experiment with food preparation and presentation, aiming to push the dinner table experience beyond taste. With his furniture he seeks to soothe small irritations around the house: not being able to comfortably watch tv while laying on the couch (Lascovius Sofa) or a round table that feels awkward when pushed in a corner (Teardrop Table).
