carved bone flower knobs. Made in our workshop in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh,
where families have worked bone for generations.

Both sizes are shallow front to back, which is the measurement that
usually causes trouble. At 14 and 16 inches deep they sit beside a bed in
a small room without crowding the walkway, and they work in a hallway
where a standard 20 inch deep cabinet would not.

🛏️ WHICH HEIGHT DO I NEED?
Measure from your floor to the top of your mattress, then match it. The
nightstand top should sit level with the mattress or an inch or two below.
Above it, the piece looms.
22" high Platform beds and lower frames.
Mattress top around 22 to 26 inches.
26" high Standard and upholstered beds.
Mattress top around 26 to 30 inches.
Most divans and sprung frames land here.
Between the two? Size down. A nightstand slightly below the mattress is
comfortable to reach into. One slightly above is not.
If neither height works, send us your measurement. We build to order on a

🤎 MATERIALS AND BUILD
▪ Buffalo bone, cut and set entirely by hand
▪ Pigmented ground in deep burgundy
▪ Solid frame, hand sanded and sealed
▪ Carved bone flower knobs
▪ Metal runners on both drawers
The runners matter. A lot of inlay furniture at this price still uses
plain wooden drawer bottoms that stick and drag once the wood moves. Ours
run on steel slides, so the drawers open the same way in year ten as they
do on day one.
The bone is a byproduct sourced from licensed suppliers. No animal is
harmed for this craft.

🌾 THE PATTERN
This is bel buti, the Mughal floral vine. Bel is the creeper. Buti is the
small flower that repeats along it. You find the same motif in Mughal
textiles, in pietra dura marble work, and on the walls of seventeenth
century tombs.
Each drawer front carries one large medallion inside a pointed oval, the
vine radiating outward, a narrow border of repeating leaves framing the
face. The top is its own composition rather than a continuation of the
front, so the piece is finished from above as well as from standing
height.
Roughly 800 individual pieces of bone go into one nightstand. Around 22
days of one artisan's work.

🏡 WHERE IT WORKS
Burgundy is easier to place than most people assume. It sits against deep
green, olive, navy, charcoal and warm cream without fighting any of them,
and it is one of the few saturated colours that still reads warm rather
than cold.
Against a green wall it does the most work
Against cream it becomes the one point of colour
In a panelled study it disappears and only the ivory shows
Bedside in a maximalist, eclectic or dark academia bedroom. Beside a
leather chair. As a lamp table in a study. In a guest room where you want
one piece that looks considered.

👐 MADE BY HAND
Sambhal, in Uttar Pradesh, has worked bone and horn for generations. It is
the craft belt this technique actually comes from, not the one usually
named on listings like this.
Bone is cut into slivers on a bandsaw. Each piece is shaped by hand, then
set one at a time onto the wooden form. The ground colour is filled in
around the set pieces. The whole surface is sanded flat and polished.
Because every piece is cut by hand, no two are identical. Slight variation
in bone tone, and the faint natural grain visible up close, are the marks
of real bone rather than a printed or moulded surface.
Order a pair and the two are made alongside each other by the same
artisan, so they read as a set.

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Wipe spills immediately. Keep out of long
direct sunlight and away from radiators. No chemical cleaners, no
abrasives, no water left standing on the surface.
