Vertical, large-scale, oil on canvas abstraction is a gestural mix of greens, reds and warm colors. This painting is inspired directly from the natural world surrounding my home studio. A move to the countryside last year, has brought a change to my work. I have long been inspired by landscapes and seascapes, mostly from my travels. Now I am looking out the window of my studio and see wildlife and birds along with the dramatic changing of seasons here in New England. Tall pines and deep, forest fauna provide a million shades of green to work from. The gestural energy of the painting is a direct response to the ever-changing environment, particularly in the Spring, when the landscape is radically transformed with new growth everywhere.

"The abstract landscape painter and printmaker, has for decades, explored the natural world of his experience in intensely colored, gestural abstractions; lively, inventive drawings and unique monoprints. In large-scale, works in oil, Rich trowels, scrapes and brushes together marks of color to suggest deep and illuminated spaces reminiscent of the sky and sea of his island home, Nantucket.
Rich is the recipient of the Basil H. Alkazzi Award (USA) and was included in Sotheby’s auction series, International Young Art. His work is featured in private and public collections nationally including, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NY; Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA and the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, OH.

lives and works in Providence, RI and Nantucket MA and is a Professor of Art at Roger Williams University, Bristol, Rhode Island.”
